Martha Colburn

If you took The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb threw in a bit of Basquiat and Ellis Ruley (see image below from Discovering Ellis Ruley) you might get something like Martha Colburn's stop-motion films.

She takes her own artwork that she paints on glass, plus puzzle pieces, footage of scary puppet shows and old Westerns and puts them together in such a way that they're like collages come to life. This is a postcard from her Thursday night show at New Museum:

She showed her films while bands and musicians like Lumberob performed. Lumberob was especially fun and weird with herky-jerky dance moves that matched the stop-motion motion of the films. If you ever get a chance to see her films in person, highly recommended--plenty to explore online, too. Like this.

Trained pigeons...spotted on a walk from Prospect Heights to Williamsburg. They're great fun to watch!

Entomologia

Back in June Jennifer Angus wallpapered Newark Museum's Ballantine House in her beautiful Insecta Fantasia pattern. It was nice to see one of her pieces closer to home at the Observatory. It's called "Victoria Fancy":
Other pieces in the Entomologia exhibit, include Lisa Wood's dioramas. "Grasshopper Reading Book" looks like something Alice might have encountered in Wonderland:
This one made me do a double take. It's Judith Klausner's "Mantis Religiosa."
It's a fun exhibit to check out on a chilly afternoon!
